    Hi all,

Here in Sumner I have had 30 Monarchs hatch up until last week.Eggs were laid on 1 September.
Despite my best efforts on “barrier contraception” I ended up wit more caterpillars than intended.
20 went off to Bluff , I know though Facebook messages they were doing well, and 15 went off to North Christchurch and just over 20 went to the Christchurch Khatikea common Butterfly house where there were 20 hatched 2 weeks ago, all safely releases. Maria has also totally replanted the Butterfly house and it looks totally delicious now.

My large collection of swan plants are now recovering and I am wondering it I need to facilitate one or two more generations to ensure overwintering specimen?

There are plenty of our progeny flying around so I’m just wondering when I should make the plants accessible.

Warm Festive greetings to you all

    Cheers,
    Malin

Hi Estelle and thank you for asking.
The yellow spots became gold spots and eventually hatched successfully.
Our first breeding season has concluded with out last hatchling successfully flying off a few days ago, before the weather turned cold.
In total we had 50 successful hatchings & releases. We also had one leaky liquid which could not fly, one crumpled wings and one which seemed like glued together by a paper like material; thus 3 which had to go to the freezer. This would be just under 6 % fatality rate, I believe that is acceptable?
    Kind regards,
    Malin

    Hi again!
Today the yellow spots are the ordinary , lovely gold appearance.
Maybe it was a very immature chrysalis and now it has sorted itself out?
Looking promising so far.Thank you for your help and advice.

    Hi!
You might want to try Terra Viva in Roydvale. They had really good sized (about 50 cm)plants at $2.50 each. Worth ringing first since they get daily deliveries but run out most days.
I also happened to see a large number of small (about 25 cm) plants at $4.50 at Mitre 10 Mega Hornby yesterday.
Otherwise the young girl in Hornby who sells swan plants on neighbourly and Facebook will be back in town on Tuesday.I can give you her grandmothers’ mobile number if that would be of some help to you.
    Kind regards
    Malin
