I was startled to find a Monarch Butterfly on the ground moving around in circles obviously in distress. I waved my hand over it and a wasp flew off it but just as quickly returned. I saw that part of the Butterflies wing was detached lying on the ground. I quickly grabbed a fly swat and killed the wasp. There was nothing I could do for the damaged Butterfly except place it in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer to die. Once it has died I will photograph the damage done. I always thought that wasps preyed on the caterpillars but not the butterflies.

Wasps are incredibly efficient predators, and wreaking havoc on all other insect species in NZ. I was shocked last year to see one gorging on a half-eaten chrysalis.
