Ever since I was a child I have wondered why monarch butterflies seem to have only 4 legs. Being an insect shouldn’t they have 6 legs!

No much smaller – it is very hard to see them.

Thanks for explaining about the front legs of monarchs. Are these front legs the same length as the other 4 or are they smaller modified legs?

Yes, and they do, but they don’t. 🙂

Two of their legs have been modified over the years – they are part of the family of “brushfoot” butterflies or “nymphalids”.

They hold their front two legs close up to their bodies most of the time and the females use these two front legs to taste-test milkweed before laying eggs on it!
