I’d been watching a caterpillar develop, and when it wasn’t on the swan plant any more I located it under a leaf on a nearby tree. It stayed motionless there for about a day, then I saw it hanging in the J-shape. The next day it was hanging straight down, the suspending “string” having extended considerably, dead. Is this a common occurrence? Any known cause?

Thanks. I didn’t see this last year in many pupations.

its not uncommon. Any time they are changing in their life cycle seems to be a high risk. Sometimes there is a reasonable explanation e.g. extreme heat or a sickly caterpillar but sometimes there isn’t.
