When does diapause start? I was asked today if the current generation of butterflies, just hatching, would be breeding or will they winter-over. I haven’t seen any ‘older’ butterflies in the last few days, tho there are still eggs & many caterpillars of all stages on my many swan plants

I think something has changed here. I’ve released a lot of butterflys over the last month and I’ve noticed egg laying has dropped right off.

Diapause is triggered by day length and temperature. The answer is: who knows. The butterflies will have it all figured out and it will happen when the conditions are right.

I had an old female laying eggs today. Hooray!!!

I have a adult butterflies who have eclosed inside the ‘castle’ over the last 2 days, both males and females. Temperatures are dropping and they’re all happy huddling together at the top. I haven’t noticed any mating, so I assume they’ve switched their ‘overwintering’ clocks on.
