I have a young pheasant that I’ve reared since a tiny chick. I am now introducing him to my garden. He insists on eating the swan plant pods and I’m worried these could be toxic to him. Any thoughts?

Hehee!! Strange behavior indeed. I have no idea if eating them will hurt him. I guess it’s best to err on the side of caution and restrict his access to them. It’s almost as if he’s playing with them.

Hi Misfit, bird is eating the pods….perhaps I’ll have to hide them 🙂 If you want to be amused, have a look at this….I was trying to get the pod off him yesterday 🙂

    Hi Gilly.

Is he eating the actual pods or mainly getting into the seed? I don’t think that the pods contain as much of the alkaloids that make monarchs poisonous to birds as the leaves do. The certainly don’t ‘bleed’ as much, especially when the seeds are ripe.
