    Hello Jacqui,
I have an English nettle patch which has been growing over 3 years, without a visit from an Admiral. Plenty of Monarchs visit our flowers, but I think west Mangere is an Admiral-free area. Unfortunately Ambury Farm has been spraying along its fencelines and around garden and scrub verges. Does anyone know where else in South Auckland I could find caterpillars?
    Happy New Year

    Hi Bjorn and all
I see this page of the Forum has been quiet – I hope that doesn’t mean that no-one in Auckland has Admirals in 2016/17.
I have flourishing English nettles, and spotted a Yellow Admiral nearby, once, in December, but no caterpillars apparently.
As Jaqui says the wasp threat is over for the year, I am eager to introduce eggs or cats to my nettle patch before the cold weather arrives.
Has anyone in Auckland some spares????
    Julia, in Mangere.

I also had a juicy green caterpillar on nettles I collected. It was a brown moth, 2 small shiny yellow slashes halfway along each forewing, and an upstanding ruff behind its head that reminded me of tricerotops.

    Hi Jaqui

About 3 years back you led me on an Admiral caterpillar hunt, and I was hooked on raising them! I now have a row of lusty-looking nettles beside a riotous garden of Buddleia, diasies, blue sage, etc. But we must be too far from breeding stock. I have been checking nettles in Ambury Farm and Cornwall Park this week, but no sign of chewed leaves or silk tents.

If anyone in South/Cenral/East Auckland has surplus Admiral caterpillars, please get in touch; a luxurious home awaits. I do have castles to protect them.

i live in Mangere, Auckland, and over 22 years have never seen Admirals in my garden. I have had a healthy clump of U. dioica for the past 2 years, and this spring have planted out another row of nettles beside my Buddleias, but despite such inducements no caterpillars yet – perhaps it is too early.

Still, if someone in South Auckland happens to have spare caterpillars during the coming months, I would be happy to translocate some!

    Hi Char

I’ve not been able to arrange for YA or RA eggs/caterpillars yet, so if any are still on offer in Auckland I could pick them up this week.

    Hopefully

Wow Angie, we are close to Ambury Farm, I will have a look tomorrow and let you know whether I find some.

Thank you too Jacqui for your offer. Hopefully I won’t need to draw down your stock!
