    Hi Connie,

They all died, poor granddaughter was so gutted.
The two big fat caterpillars my daughter managed to save by washing them every time they vomitted green blood, went into a J and then never made it.
The other caterpillars were attacked by something, she had the branches indoors in their conservatory and there may have been a spider on the branches.
They’ve given up now as it got too disheartening.

Yes, I think I’m going to have to send my daughter eggs from our plants here in Auckland, this way she can get started and at least get a few through.

Its so nice to know there is a few people in Dunedin raising Monarch’s 🙂

We had a Painted lady visit our place yesterday afternoon, I could not believe my eyes.
The butterfly was feeding on the Black knight buddleia and due to a back injury I could not go inside quick enough to obtain the camera and get a photo. So we’re keeping our eyes out in case he\she comes back 🙂

My daughter lives in Concord, Dunedin and she has no Monarchs visiting her plants at all.
I wonder if anyone else who lives in Dunedin is experiencing the same thing as well.

We intend on discussing this at our butterfly meeting on Saturday.
I know Allan’s views on it and he seems to think that we wont get an accurate count unless it is done at an exact time for everyone.
So I will post back here after our meeting on the weekend 🙂

OK, thanks Jacqui 🙂 still very small plants for sale though.
Mitre 10 Lincoln Rd, Henderson has swan plants for sale at $4.77 each, and some are a good size. However I can see these being sold first and all small ones left.

Kings plant barn in Henderson had only small plants for $1.99 each left on Saturday. They did have a 6 pack for $9.99, but these are no good for feeding hungry caterpillars.

I think I misread Caryl post, silly me. lol.

We have plenty of small swan plant seedlings popping up in the gardens, and we’re going to leave these to grow on and use for back up food.

We have around 8 caterpillars in our castle at present. We’re just bringing in the med to large caterpillars as some of our plants are still small and need to grow more.
We’ve replanted most of the gardens and pulled out all of our old and lifeless swan plants.

Is Zealandia going to stop growing swan plants as well Caryl?
As I thought it was only the grower in Pukekohe\Drury who had stopped.

If this is the case then I better advise our butterfly group and plan ahead.

Great news 🙂 I placed up my tiny male tagged Monarch on a photographers page I’m a member in and they all started asking questions on the tags 🙂 then a few were saying oh I’ve seen tagged Monarchs in the Auckland Domain, so I advised them to report them, which they did, awesome 🙂 One way to get the word out there, as a lot of photographers out there 😉

Have you tried Mitre 10 Westgate or Lincoln Rd. I know they did have plants (small) for $4.87 each for 2 for $8.

Sorry, we cant help as we’re just about stripped bare with all of our plants.
The smaller plants we do have are for selling at Te Atatu South & New Lynn festivals on April 11th & 12th. These plants are not big enough to feed hungry caterpillars.

Let me ask around in our group as someone within the group may be able to help out.

Well we have gone from “NO” Monarchs to two pairs of mating Monarchs in the gardens yesterday. A few Males flying around and a couple of females. The females that were flying around and being mated with were not mine, as none of the females had the little part of the tag I had placed on. So the numbers are building up 🙂

Whilst out driving today I also spotted 3 Monarchs fluttering across intersections, so this is good to see.

I just place a small dab of bright colored nail polish on the hind wing, or I place a X through an old tag number or use the do not use tags at the top. I cut this tag in half and place that half on the wing 🙂
