Saving milkweed (swan plant) – egg removal

    This is probably the wrong time of year to share this, but you can remove monarch eggs from plants without damaging the leaf. Edith Smith in Florida demonstrates how:

    This is particularly useful if you are short of food. When food is plentiful, it’s easy to cut the leaf off the swan plant, but when food is short you don’t want to waste anything.

    I take the eggs and put them into a takeaway food container with a sprig of swan plant in a florist’s tube, check them daily for signs of life and then move them (using a sable eyeshadow brush – nice and soft ) off the sprig onto a plant (or larger cutting) in my butterfly house.
