A question has been asked of us: How far do Monarchs move? We are both really involved now in raising caterpillars to become monarchs, tagging then releasing them. I don’t know the answer to the question. Can anyone tell me? Many thanks.

We have heard of them moving distances such as 100 metres when they are caterpillars and are looking for somewhere to pupate.

As butterflies of course in North America they can fly distances of up to 3000 km to get to the overwintering sites The furthest we have heard them travelling in New Zealand is between a place near Turangi to Whangarei, Over a period of four weeks
