One of the highlights of this season (to offset the usual disasters) .. has been observing how a butterfly can ‘learn’. I’ve had three butterflys learn to fly through trial and error over the course of several days. They have had to learn how to use their very compromised wings and have all managed to fly off eventually. I regularly rescued them for several days when they got grounded and put them somewhere safe till they were ready for the next effort. One got high in a tree and spent all that day taking cautious flutters round it before going further afield. Makes you wonder just how aware they are. I see the same with feeding the real cripples .. once they get the idea they are pretty keen next time.
