Praying mantis eating a pupa

These photos were sent to us today by Karen and concerned friends at Little Einsteins Montessori. She said:

“One of our budding little butterfly guardians was very upset to find that a praying mantis was actually eating ‘her’ chrysalis. Is a PM a natural predator of the lifecycle of a butterfly – or a pest? We are all in a state of shock here at Little Einsteins Montessori.”

Sad to say that mantises – both the NZ native one and the introduced South African one – will eat chrysalises / pupae. This gives you a learning opportunity to explain about the natural cycle in your butterfly habitat, predators and parasites, and life and death.

Thanks Karen for posting these photos.
