Upcycling Challenge with Dalton’s Prizes

Kiwis are known for their ingenuity… and that often translates to the butterfly garden. In preparation for our stand at the NZ Flower and Garden Show this year we need your ideas as to how you recycle containers, tools and implements in your garden (or habitat) to make it more useful/successful in raising butterflies. You can draw a plan or something you will be trying this coming season, or upload a photo of an item for the butterfly garden and or habitat “making it better for butterflies” using materials that were designed for another purpose. It can be something that you’ve seen elsewhere and want to implement, OR it can be something you’ve designed (for example a plan or a sketch).

We’ve uploaded some examples: takeaway food containers become incubators for hatching eggs;  a bath will keep stinging nettle safe from children/pets and also to prevent the plant from spreading into the garden. I have seen rims of bicycle wheels positioned where monarchs will pupate. And mosquito net and lunch protectors repurposed to keep predators off plants and caterpillars.

Successful ideas will be used at the MBNZT’s Upcycling entry at the NZ Flower and Garden Show, November 2018.

Contest will run until 31 July – and while everyone is welcome to upload suggestions, the prizes will only be available to NZ entrants. We would ask you to ensure you have LIKED our FB page but for those who don’t use Facebook, you could email them to jacqui@monarch.org.nz and she will upload them.

MBNZT will choose the top five and then ask FB people to judge the winner(s) by ‘liking’ their favourite. First prize will be a Daltons Ultimate Butterfly Gardeners Pack worth $200, containing 2 x Daltons Premium Flower bed mix (40 litre);  2 x Garden Time Compost (40 litre) ;  2 x Daltons Garden Time Potting mix (40 litre);  1 x Daltons Premium Rose and Flower fertiliser (8 kg);  1 x Daltons Organic Bio-fungicide Granules;  3 x Besgrow Coir Mulch (60 litre);  1 x Daltons  Garden Time Chicken and Sheep Pellets (10 kg);  1 x Daltons Goldcote Premium Landscape and Garden Fertiliser;  10 x 1.3 litre growing pots and 1 pair comfortable, versatile Red Back gardening gloves from Omni Products www.omniproducts.co.nz.

Yes, it came into the home filled with delicious pad thai… but then it becomes a pad for my first instar caterpillars.

A mosquito net can also be used to cover your swan plants and protect the caterpillars from wasps.

Use these lunch protectors (available from any $2 shop or similar) to cover seedlings from predators/parasites.

An old bath can be used for plants that would spread by suckering…

So let us have your ideas please… Email them to photos@monarch.org.nz and we will upload them.
