Some reports showing the progress of tagged butterflies indicate the “found” butterflies were released off the coast of Africa! This needs to be remedied.
The grid reference (geocode) for the release is 0 degrees latitude and 0 degrees longitude. This is being caused by wrong details in the system for some taggers, and can easily be rectified if you follow the instructions below.
Here’s an example of one of the ‘faulty’ maps.
To fix this, before releasing your next tagged butterfly, can you please check the following:
1. Go to: http://www.monarch.org.nz/monarch/wp-admin/admin.php?page=tag-butterfly
2. Under the line where YOUR address shows (mine is shown in the example) you may see your geocodes (geographical co-ordinates). If not, click on the red underlined link (“Click here to enter your details manually.”)
3. If the latitude and longitude are not showing, you will need to change the way your address appears, which will automatically generate these codes.
4. Go back to the address line, and begin typing your address in slowly.
5. After a few letters of the street name, you will be offered suggestions. The suburb may not be the same as you would like it to show but accept the address details generated for you. Press the ENTER key.
6. The latitude and longitude for that address should now have been entered into the system.
