Giant swan plant (Gomphocarpus physocarpus). Like the swan plant, only hardier and a much more vigorous grower, producing more leaf in a shorter time. $5 packet (20-50 seeds). Both swan plant and Giant swan plant come from African continent.
Tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica). An American milkweed. Choose either scarlet or gold flowers. $5 packet (20-30 seeds). Lower growing, suited to warm regions.
Swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata). Another American species, best suited to colder regions as it is frost hardy. Grows from a rhizome, and will sprout again each season. $5 packet (20-30 seeds). Pink flowers.
Pureora (Urtica incisa). Also known as scrub nettle. It is a host plant for Red and Yellow Admiral butterflies. U. incisa dies back during the Winter and regenerates again in Spring. It is native to New Zealand and SE Australia. Height variously reported between 40cm and 2m. Leaves 5-12 cm. Likes shade or mild sun and a sheltered spot. $5 packet.
All the above seed is gathered and packaged and distributed by volunteers, to help raise more funds so that we can help protect NZ’s other species of butterflies (and moths). The Monarch butterfly is a wonderful ambassador for insects.
Butterfly Mix . These seeds are a blend of wildflowers (annuals) which will provide nectar for butterflies and bees, and a block of mixed colour in your garden. Butterfly Mix is $4 a packet.
