    Hi all

    We're getting all prepared for tagging 2012 and hope you'll join in.

    This year we are working with the NZ Association of Science Educators and schools will be encouraged to get involved. You can see the timeline here.

    Not only will classes and individuals be more involved in tagging, but they will be encouraged to plant swan plant seeds and learn to raise their plants and create a Milkweed Diary.

    We will also be running a special on-line course for children later in the year.

    I will be tagging this year and hopefully a few within our group may want to give it a go as well;)

    Excellent Charlotte.

    The tags are still being labelled but everyone who has registered for tagging will be emailed as soon as they are ready to go. Tagging should begin 1 March.

    We are also looking for people to demonstrate tagging to schools etc. More about that in the email update when it comes.

    If anyone is interested in making a film of "how to tag a butterfly" or "catching a butterfly with a net" (for use by schools) it would be great to upload them to Youtube. There are quite a few on there already but nothing NZ I think.

    Happy to help on a Fri at schools for tagging;)
    When I have the tags will give a video a go and see how it comes out.
    I will see if I have a photo of a tagged butterfly to show everyone.
    All sounds exciting Jacqui;)

    Our school, Mercury Bay Area School, are looking at getting involved. There are other primary schools in our area too so I will encourage them also.

    A couple of first impressions as a non-expert and looking at getting involved...

    A simplified information sheet for teachers and parents would be a bonus. One of my first thoughts was a Youtube video to help teachers in the first instance, they will need to get up to speed if they are to be the 'experts'. The video clip would also be useful for parents supporting their children. Science Week is not until 7th May so there is time to "GET READY".

    I would be happy to help with preparing some resources if required.

    Yes, the Youtube vidceos are in the pipeline, Paul. Most of us are very busy with a display down in Christchurch and also releasing the Monarchs at the civic memorial - so it will be done in the next few weeks, one on tagging and one on catching butterflies.

    Jacqui is there any chance the tagging people can find out how many are tagging in their area. Like for us say Waitakere to Riverhead?

    We don't need an address (as I understand about the privacy act)just like locations eg: Te atatu South (x2), Henderson (x1), Massey, Riverhead etc... this is just to help the people tagging to know if they have others in their area. As this came up at our tagging demo yesterday at home;-)

    Perhaps other people tagging might like to make contact with people in their area, and can let you know.. Just a thought.

    Each year we struggle to instruct people to teach people how to tag monarchs. The instructions are really pretty simple: place the tag on the mitten shaped (discal) cell on the underside of the hindwing. Yet, each year we receive images of monarchs that are improperly tagged. Usually the tag is placed too close to the margin on the hindwing - a weaker portion of the wing where the flexing of the wing is likely to result in breakage and loss of the tag and a portion of the wing - reducing the flight capability of the butterfly. Tags are placed on the discal cell for two reasons 1) this area is structurally sound and 2) the tag is close to the center of lift and gravity for the butterfly reducing the possibility of impeding flight. Under no circumstances should tags be placed on the upperside of the wings as shown in this image.
