Hi Mary

The Monarchs were in Victoria park in Rangiora.
These photos were taken around 3 months ago and they may have moved from the trees.

Cheers

Hi Flutterbys I was so impressed by these photos I asked my sister to come with me to see if we could see them in real life, we spent a long time up there and didn't have any luck we were very disappointed. Could you tell me where up there they were taken please what track it might have been.

We had a great weekend! The lady on the right in the first photo was roped in to draw the raffle (we chose her because her T-shirt matched ours). Lots of interest in the 2011 calendar, with its lovely photos.

As a resident of Whakatane it surprises me the number of overwintering trees that are around the town considering its size. The river walkway/botanical gardens, Warren park, Awatapu lagoon and others all have various trees rhat house clusters of Monarchs during winter.
The numbers of butterflies were slow to build up last season so possibly the late season resulted in more butterflies overwintering.

Hi Ian,I live in Whakatane and I have never seen so many Monarchs wintering over as I have this year. They are not only along the riverbank walk but on many trees around the town.I have been tagging them this summer and because of the mild temps we have had(yes we have had more than enough rain)I still have a number of my Swan Plants that haven't died off . I am having regular visits to them and to my large Bottlebrush Tree.We are not lucky enough to have protection orders on many trees in our town.I spend a lot of time enthusing to my friends about MY butterflies and sharing seed. Our walking group on Monday 16th August also were amazed at how many were about.

Beautiful photos of Cermatulus nasalis, also known as the Predatory Shield Bug or Glossy Shield Bug.

It's Hort page is here:
http://www.hortnet.co.nz/key/keys/info/enemies/lba-enem/lbapred9.htm

Gibbs (1994) describes it:
"A flat brown soldier bug (Cermatulus nasalis) has been noted to have an appetite for monarch larvae. This 10mm long bug looks like a small version of the common green vegetable bug, except that it is dark brown with a yellow crescent mark on its back, between the wings. It feeds by spearing the larva on its long hollow beak and sucking out its contents. The soldier bug is found in Australia and New Zealand."
