I saw one butterfly flying over our section this afternoon
Yes, they are raising Monarch caterpillars in England - but they are running low on milkweed so they are feeding the last instar larvae on butternut squash. These photographs from Gary Watson. Thanks Gary!
Photographs from Pieter Verhoeven - thanks Pieter.
Very active between 1 and 2 pm. even those in the deep shaded cluster got moving. There anre only 25 left there tonight whereas there were over 70 countable yesterday. I think I still have over 400 camped in the three different trees here.
Found on ground while raking up leaves, close to dying (note - still barely alive next day as I submit this report)
These photos where taken in his Island Bay backyard March 2008 by Pieter Verhoeven. Aren’t they fantastic!
Estimate 50 - 100 Monarchs in a pohutukawa above the road, amongst other trees and shrubs.
Estimate 200 - 400 Monarchs settled in the tree, with some flying around the tree.
