Munching Caterpillar Dance
Jacqui filmed a monarch egg hatching, and Saira edited the footage to music and made the hatching caterpillar dance. Here’s the resulting video!

I can’t seem to bring up the video of the larva hatching. Is it still available?

enjoyed it very much, music great, didnt realise the caterpilla ate the egg shell!! but can it do a great dance!!

Enjoyed your movie of the caterpillar hatching - had never seen this before and was unaware that the caterpillar ate the shell of the egg.

Well done, Jacqui, that is excellent. We’ve got still photos of the caterpillar hatching, but with the movement and music of the video it is brilliant.

I have a question I would like an answer to if poss. Because of food shortage I transferred some catterpillars from one plant to another but they seemed to stop eating so I put them back again where they promptly started chomping away agai. My grandchildrens Kindy have had the same problem.They seem to know their own original plant .Have you a solution to this. Thanks Cheers Shirley

It was so cool to watch the larva hatch I never knew it ate the egg It was so amazing.I have lots of swanplants myself its my responsibility to look after them.I have had 20-30 Caterpillars and I have had 11 chrysalises hanging on my shelf and they have hatched in to healthy butterflies.

We have just covered a single large plant with a mosquito net. Now hopefull that a few caterpillars might reach maturity!!

Why have u covered the plant with netting.I wasn’t aware that monarchs had any enimies.Our problem is usually culling to make sure the food supply lasts the numbers we have.This year with less numbers we have not had to cull.Was the wet wet cold winter detrimental?

In most parts of New Zealand the wasps are killing the caterpillars, Jean. We have Swan plants for Africa here in Russell - and only where people are growing the caterpillars under cover are they producing butterflies.
I’s very annoying - but soon the wasps will change their diet to nectar and then the caterpillars will survive out of doors.

hello ,we have never had any trouble with pest’s,i never have to
cover the swan plant’s, it’s a fight to get the swan plant’s to a decent size
before the butterflies arrive,one year i rang 2ZB,and offered catterpillars to any one who wanted them ,one lady took an ice cream container ,with heap’s in it ,she thought it was great,and so did her children.,cheer’s Burness

I live in Canada but have visited New Zealand 4 times and am amazed at the number of monarchs, the gentleness of these creatures, and the loving care they receive from the Kiwis. A very interesting hobby to persue and an amazing dancing video!

Hi there! ohaeawai School has been going swan plants for monarchs for many , many years. probably since i came back here to teach in 1989. We have a good number of plants this year & so far lots of monarch visitors leaving eggs. We are confident of providing lots more butterflies.
We have a number of wasps about too which is a worry.

That is so cool!
When I watched it the other day, I somehow found other videos of different stages of the process. One was of the butterfly coming out of the chrysalis. Now I cant find that Any ideas? Maybe I was dreaming?
