I am happy to tell you that I had many sightings of this beautiful creatures in our school, Manurewa High School, in Auckland.
We are very lucky that while the school extended the science building, it created a small garden between the old and the new building. Now, the new and the old part, of the building, is joint together by a window which allowes to view into the garden.
Our science technician had this wonderful idea of growing swan plants, which of course attracts the monarchs and it didn`t take these `Creatures of Curiousity`to long to find them.
Last year we must have at least 100 caterpilars in this particular garden.
I am the gardener of the school, to keep supply coming I grew more of the swan plants in our greenhouse, which I then planted in the gardens around the school and of course for the `butterfly nursery`.
This year I noticed we had an increase in monarchs in our grounds.
The students (and of course the butterflies, too) are also very lucky as the can watch the metamorphosis from caterpilar to butterfly from a safe distance. I hope we will see more of the monarchs as these lively creatures enrich our environment and provide our kids an fantastic learning opportunity.
